When the Nintendo Switch debuted in March 2017, it was already behind the competition in terms of performance. This results in some rough looking ports like ARK: Survival Evolved as well as “impossible ports” including games like Witch 3 and eternal apocalypse.
With all the rumors about the Switch getting a successor sooner or later, Digital Foundry has decided to investigate games on Nintendo’s current generation of hardware with some of the lowest resolutions and see if a follow-up to its newest system can fix the situation.
Setting some guidelines, it investigates games based on “how low, the lowest typical resolution is in portable mode” and limits the list to native Switch software that renders full 3D graphics. Apart from games like Witcher and DOOM, some of the other titles mentioned include Mortal Kombat 11 and Nitro Fueled Crash Team Racing.
“We are nearing the end of the Nintendo Switch lifecycle and its successor is highly anticipated to arrive in 2023 – but the catalog of games on existing systems is impressive. However, getting high-end games to work on older mobile chipsets is challenging – and resolution is often a challenge.” the biggest chunk. So what are the lowest resolution Switch games? And can the back-compat Switch 2/Super Switch improve the existing game catalog in terms of image quality and pixel count?”
