Apart from being controversial casting, not much is known about the Mario-based feature film produced by Illumination with Nintendo. The latest bit of official news we’ve got is that the release date has been pushed from December 2022 to April 2023, which raises questions about how production is going. Otherwise, we’re in the dark, without even a single teaser to keep the hype going. Since the project is kept secret, every piece of information is a gold mine, and now we may finally know what the actual title of the film is: Super Mario Bros.
Illumination Studios Paris, the subsidiary of Illumination responsible for animation, owns “Super Mario Bros.” listed in their portfolio official website. It was first discovered yesterday by @DespicableOutof on Twitter, but it is not known how long the page has actually been registered. Even more evidence to suggest that Super Mario Bros. will be the official title, last week, the pre-order page went live Amazon for the ONO 99 game themed “Super Mario Bros. movies” from Mattel. The list has been deleted.
Super Mario Bros. is also the title of a live-action feature film from the 90s, and although it was a critical and commercial failure at the time of its release, it has become something of a cult classic. Could it be that Nintendo is trying to make us forget about it completely? Who knows.
Despite all the evidence pointing to it, we still don’t know for sure if Super Mario Bros. will be the title of the film, so we’ll have to wait for official confirmation from Nintendo and/or Illumination. Hope we hear something on reported Nintendo Direct, or maybe at Game Awards the end of this year.
Super Mario Bros. opens in North American theaters on April 7, 2023.
