After years of leading the fitness world, in 2014, a beloved leg warmer fan closed her studio and seems to have disappeared from the public eye. new TMZ documentary, What Really Happened to Richard Simmons, investigated his retreat, prompting the teacher to make his first statement to fans in five years.

The documentary premiered on August 22 on Hulu and FOX, and on August 24, Simmons made a rare update to the public. Facebook page. “Thank you, everyone, for your kindness and love!” wrote the 74-year-old, sharing an image of a smiling face holding a ‘Thank You’ sign. “Love, Richard.” Simmons representative Tom Estey confirmed for It New York Post that the message was personally composed by the star, adding that he is doing well.

“Richard is so grateful for the continuous outpouring of love and gratitude he receives from around the world,” Estey continued. “He is happy, healthy and living the life he has chosen to live.”

Fans were overjoyed by Simmons’ silence breaking. The post garnered 40,000 reactions and more than 6,000 comments. Many shared photos of their own encounters with him. “Thank you. I always feel like I have a friend who grew up because of you,” one person commented. “We are so glad you are doing well! Missing you so much,” added another. “You have been such an amazing human being, with so much love and care for so many people. The world loves you,” one person wrote.

Simmons last spoke publicly to fans in 2017 to tell them he was “unwell” after being hospitalized for “severe indigestion,” said the manager at the time. He also denied growing speculation that he had gone missing.

“Hello to everyone who has shown concern for me and sent their best wishes. You will never know how much it means to me. Aren’t you sick of hearing and reading about me?! LOL,” he said in a statement, per People. “Well now you know that I’m not ‘lost,’ just a little under the weather. I’m sure I’ll feel good and be back home in a few days.”

In Simmons’ close decade from the spotlight, theories surrounding his absence have swirled, culminating even in the popular podcast, Missing Richard Simmons. It TMZ the documentary, however, alleged that knee problems eventually stripped him of the gym.

“Doctors told him in 2014, around the time he disappeared, that he needed a left knee replacement,” the doctor claims, per FOX. “And if he doesn’t get it, he may never be able to exercise again. Well, this is the key to the disappearance of Richard Simmons. The prospect of surgery, becoming inactive, plunged Richard into a deep depression.”

The documentary goes on to allege that Simmons wants to be remembered as the energetic fitness icon he was before the surgery, which is why he chose to remain secretive. Simmons himself, however, has not publicly confirmed or denied the claims.
