The long rumored AirPods Pro (2nd generation) are official. Apple launches new noise-canceling wireless headphones as part of iPhone 14 event “Away Out”. They are available for preorder on Friday and will ship from September 23 for $249 (£249, AU $399).
The new AirPods Pro follow the original noise-canceling model that debuted in October 2019. They’re powered by Apple’s new H2 chip, which delivers more processing power while being more energy efficient, according to Apple. The new chip, combined with a new low distortion driver, enables sound enhancement that offers greater clarity and depth. Noise cancellation has also been improved – Apple says the new AirPods have “double” the noise cancellation of the original AirPods Pro.

Preorders for the 2022 AirPods Pro models began on September 9, with the first sets of new earbuds starting to ship on September 23.
My first immediate impression
I got the chance to try out the AirPods Pro 2 for a limited time at a launch event in a noisy demo area, with hundreds of people around me. Noise cancellation seems to be improving, though it only manages to drown out the noise in the room. I also think that the earbuds sound cleaner and clearer than the original AirPods Pro when listening to some songs on Apple’s iPhone 14 demo phone. (I can’t use the buds with my own iPhone and the tracks I usually use to test headphones on.)
I think it is very important to get a tight seal for optimal noise cancellation and sound quality. Apple hasn’t changed the design of the ear tips — with the original AirPods, I used the large ear tips and also used a third-party foam tip — but will now include a fourth extra small ear tip for those with smaller ears.
Some hope the new AirPods Pro can stream Apple Lossless tracks over wireless. Apple didn’t say anything about it, but it’s possible that some of the features will be revealed at a later date. With the original AirPods Pro, for example, Apple didn’t introduce Spatial Audio until months after they were released.
In the Spatial Audio section, Apple says AirPods Pro now have personalized Spatial Audio that creates a more customized listening experience for your ears. The transparency mode is also improved and adapts to any ambient noise you encounter, and there’s a new personalized spatial audio feature along with touch swipe controls on the bar to add to the pinch controls.
Battery life is now up to six hours on a single charge (up from five), and the case gives you four additional charges. Additionally, the case now has a built-in speaker, which allows it to play sound for use with Apple’s precise Find My feature.
While some may be disappointed Apple hasn’t done more to improve the design of the AirPods Pro 2 (there have been some tweaks to the microphone configuration and a few other minor enhancements including ventilation), the 2nd generation AirPods Pro are mostly what I expected them to be: the AirPods Pro. sound better with better noise cancellation, better battery life, and a wireless charging case with some enhanced features.
I’ll say more about them in my full review — stay tuned — where I’ll compare them to some of the other top noise-canceling earbuds, includingwhich was also revealed this week.
