Four people were killed and eight others injured when a passenger van carrying factory workers overturned on the Palisades Interstate Parkway in New Jersey overnight, officials said.

The Ford Econoline E350 vehicle was speeding through Englewood Cliffs at around 1:25 a.m. when it rolled and landed at the center median near Exit 2, reports ABC Eyewitness News.

The 12 passengers of the van found themselves trapped in the crushed rubble and had to be evacuated by firefighters.

Four passengers were pronounced dead on the spot. Eight others were taken to a regional hospital to be treated for injuries ranging from bruising to severe head trauma.

Five of the crash victims were transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, one to Jersey City Medical Center, one to Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, and one to Englewood Health.

The van was used to transport employees from a factory in upstate New York to their homes at the end of their shifts.

The Daily Voice reports that authorities believe the van driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel before the vehicle overturned.

The victims had not been identified as of Friday, and the cause of the crash is being investigated by several agencies.

The southern lane of the Palisades Parkway was closed to traffic for hours, blocking access to the George Washington Bridge, but the road has reopened.
