Shark in Hawaii leaves lady in ‘important situation’ after being bitten

A French woman bitten by a shark off the coast of Maui on a Saturday afternoon.

In a release issued by the County of Maui, authorities said that officers responded to the coastal area of ​​Pāʻia Bay on the island’s northern coast at around 4:09 p.m. local time.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers saw that bystanders had taken the 51-year-old man to the beach and treated his injuries until medics and firefighters took over.

The victim was reportedly seen swimming and possibly snorkeling in the murky waters about 100 meters from the beach prior to the incident.

He was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition.

An investigation into the bite is ongoing.

Maui Now reports that the Department of Land and Natural Resources’ Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DLNR) is also responding.

The outlet wrote that Maui County had closed the three beaches of the north coast until the Sunday after the incident, and personnel from the DLNR’s Division of Aquatic Resources and Maui Marine Safety officials posted shark warning signs on both sides of Pāʻia Bay.
