The twenty fifth anniversary of Princess Diana’s loss of life mourns

PARIS – Mourners commemorated the 25th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death in Paris on Wednesday, laying flowers and leaving messages on the bridge over the underpass where she died in a car crash.

Flowers and images of Diana adorn the Flame of Liberty covered in gold leaf, a replica of the torch of the Statue of Liberty at the north end of the Pont de L’Alma which has become her unofficial memorial in the French capital.

The Princess was just 36 years old when the limousine carrying her and her lover Dodi al-Fayed crashed in a tunnel under a bridge as it sped away from photographers who were chasing her on a motorbike.

“Deja 25 ans (25 years old already),” reads one card left at the memorial, where a mob of locals and tourists – surrounded by a media camera crew – came to pay their respects, leave flowers and take pictures.

“Forever in our hearts,” read another with a photo of Diana left by someone who identified herself as Monique from Luxembourg.

Millions of people around the world mourn the “daughter of the people”, as British Prime Minister Tony Blair described it in 1997.

The mother of princes William and Harry, her death plunged the monarchy into crisis, came after the breakdown of her marriage to heir to the throne Prince Charles with revelations of the hostility, adultery and misery she felt in her royal role.

Her continuing interest in Diana’s life was illustrated Saturday when the black Ford Escort she drove in the 1980s sold at auction in the UK for $844,000.
