When it launches in 2020, the PlayStation 5 will not only one of the greatest game consoles ever made. It’s also one of the heaviest, with the complete Disc Drive Edition weighing in at 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg) and the Digital Edition reaching 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg). But today, eagle-eyed reporter at Press Start has recorded release a set of new PS5 models which weigh about 13 percent less than their launch counterpart.

New PS5 models (CFI-1202A and B for Disk and Digital versions, respectively) first appeared on several Japanese retail sites over the weekend with a planned September 15 launch date. But Press Start reports that the new models are on shelves at many Australian retailers right now, including a manual that lists their official weight at 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg) for the Disk Drive Edition and 7.5 lbs. 3.4 kg) for the Digital Edition. No other visible changes in either system case size or system specifications are listed, according to the report.

Lighter and more expensive than ever

Those who follow the details of making game console hardware may remember that this is not the first internal revision to the PS5 hardware. Model CFI-11XX—which is also hitting Australia first in August 2021— coming in at 9.25 lbs (4.2 kg) and 7.9 lbs (3.6 kg) for Disc and Digital Editions, respectively. That effectively splits the weight difference between the launch model and the newest model hitting Australia today.

Model Year Disk Drive Digital
CFI-10XX 2020 9.9 pounds (4.5 kg) 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg)
CFI-11XX 2021 9.25 lbs (4.2 kg) 7.9 lbs (3.6 kg)
CFI-12XX 2022 8.6 lbs (3.9 kg) 7.5 pounds (3.4 kg)

Subsequent testing showed weight loss last year due to smaller and redesigned heat sink it looks like improve console heat dissipation. It’s not clear what makes the newest model lighter, but reports sourced from suppliers from the beginning of the year suggested Sony moving towards a new 6 nm production process for AMD’s CPU systems. In addition to potentially helping with production result, the change could also be part of an internal redesign that features fewer heavy parts than before (or simply a better, lighter cooler). The launch of the new PS5 model in Australia comes days after Sony raised the suggested retail price of the PS5 up to 13 percent in many non-US territories, including Australia. Interestingly, the Japanese price hike will take effect on September 15, the same day Japanese retailers list for the launch of the new CFI-1200 model.

Both PS5 Editions have shown a nearly linear pattern of weight loss in less than two years on the market. If that trend continues at the same rate, the PS5 Disk Drive Edition will weigh exactly zero pounds on August 31, 2034, with the Digital Edition reaching weightlessness on March 20, 2035. Frankly, we see no reason to doubt it. the eventual release of the mass-free PS5 in full time.
