PlayStation Acquires Savage Sport Studios, Focuses on Cellular Video games

PlayStation today announced its plans to acquire Savage Game Studios to enhance its mobile game development.

Hermen Hulst, head of PlayStation Studios, made the announcement at PS Blogs. If you don’t know the team, it’s a company made up of two European studios that make mobile games. Among its staff are veterans of major mobile developers such as Rovio, Zynga, Wargaming, and many more. Hulst described Savage as “a highly talented creative team with years of experience making some of the most popular mobile games enjoyed by players around the world”.

This acquisition will put the team in Newly established PlayStation Studios Mobile Division, “which will operate independently of our console development and focus on innovative on-the-go experiences based on new and existing PlayStation IPs”. Savage is working on an “unannounced AAA mobile live action game”.

We’ve heard in the past about how Sony wants to expand and strengthen its mobile efforts, and this seems like the first meaningful push in that direction. Hulst confirmed that PlayStation Studios will still continue to create “extraordinary, narrative-driven single-player experiences”, highlighting some of the big first-party titles released this year, such as Forbidden Western Horizon and Big Tour 7. As with its PC port, the company’s mobile output will be “just as additive”, extending the reach of the PlayStation beyond your PS5 or PS4 console.
