Intel Z790 motherboard supports up to DDR5-6800 . memory
Here are the first few details about the Intel Z790 memory support.
We received documents for the upcoming MSI Z790 series of motherboards, including the specifications. The docs confirm that this motherboard will support the JEDEC DDR5-5600 specification by default (for Alder Lake which is 4800 MT/s).
The MSI MEG Z790 Series supports up to 6800+ MT/s in 1 DIMM Per Channel (1DPC) and 1-rank configurations. For 2-rank memory, that speed will drop to 6400 MT/s. In comparison, MSI Z690 premium MEG boards such as GODLIKE, ACE or UNIFY support DDR5 memory up to 6666 MT/s, while the high-end segment (MPG) goes up to 6400 MT/s.
There will also be a Z790 motherboard with DDR4 memory supporting speeds of up to 5333 MT/s in 1DPC and 1R configurations. The fastest MSI Z690 DDR4 board supports memory up to 5200 MT/s.
Interestingly, none of the MSI X670E motherboards listed on the official website have memory specifications. Therefore, it can’t be said for sure whether the Z790 or X670E series supports faster memory, or there may be no difference at all.
In fact, neither ASUS, Gigabyte nor ASRock list memory specifications, but Biostar did it (thanks to dudulab for letting us know). According to the specifications of the Valkyrie X670E, it supports overclocked memory up to DDR5-6000.
AMD has yet to reveal details about the EXPO technology for the DDR5 memory overclocking profile. This information has not been shared by any of the board partners or even AMD itself.
