‘The issue is you can assume quite a bit’

  • Mark Zuckerberg says he needs to exercise every morning because checking his phone feels like he’s “punching the gut.”

  • Meta’s CEO told Joe Rogan that he now does mixed martial arts every morning before starting work.

Mark Zuckerberg says that waking up in the morning and looking at his phone feels like a “punch in the stomach”, which eventually forced him to change his exercise routine.

On Thursday’s “The Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, Zuckerberg described his morning routine for hosting Joe Rogan, saying he gets an hour or more of exercise every morning to cope with the stresses of his role as CEO of Meta.

“I wake up in the morning, look at my phone, you get millions of messages coming in, and that’s usually not good. People order good things to tell me in person,” Zuckerberg said.

“So it’s almost like waking up and getting punched in the stomach, so that’s OK… now I have to reset myself and be productive and not stressed about this,” he added.

Zuckerberg says he likes exercises “that require full focus” to take his mind off work.

“I used to run a lot, but the problem with running is that you can think a lot,” he says.

Zuckerberg previously praised his love for surf and thwartother water sports, but he told Rogan that he’s recently gotten into MMA, or mixed martial arts.

“What’s so physically exciting, but also intellectually so, where you can’t afford to focus on anything else? MMA is the perfect thing because if you stop paying attention for one second, you’ll end up at the bottom,” he says.

“I’ve found, especially as the company has grown, that it’s more important,” he told Rogan, referring to his morning exercise routine.
